Kaohsiung Medical University Visit BASF Kaohsiung Daliao Plant to Strengthen

Practical Links Between the Chemical Industry and Health & Safety

        On October 22, 2025, the Department of Medicinal and Applied Chemistry at Kaohsiung Medical University organized an industrial visit to the BASF production facility in Daliao, Kaohsiung. The visit was led by Professor Wei-Yu Lin, Chair of the Department, together with Professor Vinod Kumar, and accompanied by department students. The purpose of this visit was to help students gain first-hand insight into the operational practices of the international chemical industry, while strengthening the practical connections between chemical expertise, industrial applications, occupational safety, and environmental health. This initiative reflects the university’s educational philosophy of integrating medical education with industry and public health.

        During the visit, professionals from BASF Kaohsiung Daliao Plant warmly welcomed the group and provided an overview of BASF’s global presence, core products, and its production role in Taiwan. They also introduced the diverse roles of chemical products in industrial processes, everyday applications, and high-technology industries. Students further gained an in-depth understanding of BASF’s comprehensive systems in process safety, risk assessment, quality management, and environmental, health, and safety (EHS). The visit allowed students to observe firsthand the company’s strong commitment to personnel safety, regulatory compliance, and sustainable development. All participants complied with plant regulations by wearing designated protective clothing and safety shoes, experiencing the strict occupational safety standards required in an industrial environment.

        Through this visit, faculty and students of the Department of Medicinal and Applied Chemistry developed a more concrete understanding of the close relationship between the chemical industry and medicine, occupational health, and environmental health. The experience also provided valuable inspiration for the development of students’ professional competencies and future career paths.
