KMU Showcases Strength in International Education and Industry Collaboration at India Higher Education Summit

A delegation of ten Taiwanese universities, including Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU), participated in the Higher Education Summit and Expo organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). The event, which focuses on the transformation and development of global higher education ecosystems, attracted prominent educators, policymakers, and scholars from around the world. The Taiwan delegation was led by Dr. Wei-Chung Wang, Director of the Taiwan Mandarin Education Center in India and Head of the India Center at National Tsing Hua University.

Dr. Wang highlighted the strong interest among Indian students in semiconductor technologies and related chemical materials—areas where Taiwan excels. He emphasized that Taiwan’s Mandarin-based instruction not only delivers advanced technical knowledge but also enhances students’ language skills. “The combination of semiconductor education and Mandarin instruction is a key advantage for Taiwanese universities recruiting in India,” he said.

Taiwan’s Representative of India, Dr. Mumin Chen, noted that although Taiwan hosts over 100,000 international students annually, only around 3,000 are from India. He expressed hope that this event would raise awareness of Taiwan’s rich educational resources and safe, reliable learning environment among Indian students.

Dr. Vinoth Kumar, Head of the International Affairs Division at KMU’s College of Life Sciences, shared his personal journey of earning a Ph.D. in Taiwan. He emphasized that the most significant difference between Taiwan and India lies in the quality of the research environment. “Taiwan’s well-established research atmosphere made my doctoral journey smooth and productive,” he said. Dr. Kumar also pointed out that KMU hosts the largest Indian student community in southern Taiwan and offers excellent research conditions, making it an ideal destination for Indian students. “Taiwan provides high-quality education in a safe and welcoming environment, and its cultural atmosphere is perfect for Indian students to grow into globally competitive talents.”

KMU currently has over 50 Indian Ph.D. students, primarily in the College of Life Sciences and the Department of Medicinal and Applied Chemistry. These departments maintain strong ties with the Indian pharmaceutical industry and collaborate with companies to offer scholarships, internships, and research opportunities—creating a seamless pathway from education to employment.

In recent years, KMU has actively participated in initiatives such as the INTENSE Program and the Taiwan Experience Education Program (TEEP), which help international students gain hands-on experience and career development opportunities. The university also partners with global companies to promote smart healthcare and talent cultivation, establishing international academic exchange platforms and integrated clinical data systems. These collaborations not only enhance students’ research and practical skills but also pave the way for successful careers in the global job market.

Through its commitment to internationalization and industry-academia collaboration, KMU continues to demonstrate its leadership in global education and offers Indian students a gateway to the world.
